The Via Advent – Coming Fall of 2010

The Great Silence had lulled the people of God into a stupor.  God’s voice had remained unheard for 400 years. But the promise of Messiah remained steadfast in the hearts of the faithful.  When and how would He appear?

The Via Advent shares the tale of the coming of the Messiah, not as a conquering King or a terrible warrior of righteousness, but as a tender child born to poor Jewish country girl who courageously said, “May Your will be done, Lord.” Through a unique storytelling style, The Via Advent will sweep you through the scriptures reminding us why the world celebrates the Incarnation of God during the Christmas season. These devotions will carry you through both the Christmas and Epiphany season through the eyes of Elizabeth, the mother of John, Mary and Joseph, and the wise Gentiles from a far-away land.

Set for release in September of 2010, The Via Advent is the second book in the Via Devotional series.

The Via Crucis

the_via_crucis_bookA Roman soldier. An anguished mother. A death row prisoner. An unsuspecting pilgrim. A treacherous friend. Jesus touches each of these and many others—seen and unseen—on His agony-filled way to the cross.

Combining sacred scripture, storytelling, and personal reflection, draws readers into a heartfelt and inspiring contemplation of Jesus’ sacrifice and His triumphant victory over death. Evocative charcoal illustrations and raw, vivid stories voiced by those present at Christ’s trials and crucifixion capture the pain, power, and passion of the Savior’s suffering on humanity’s behalf.

Deeply moving and personal, the forty devotions work equally well as individual reading or in a community setting. Inspired by the centuries-old practice of the stations of the cross,  The Via Crucis invites contemporary believers to find fresh meaning in contemplation and prayer on what it means to carry the cross and follow Christ.

About the Artist

Jenny Slaver

Jenny Slaver

Jenny Slaver has been drawing since she could hold a crayon. She met Shawn Small at a camping retreat he hosted while she was still in high school. One night, around the campfire, Shawn affirmed her gift for creativity and art. Jenny claims that night as one of the first moments that she truly began to acknowledge herself as an artist. Since then, Shawn has been a diehard advocate for Jenny’s art.

While creating all forty original pieces for The Via Crucis, Jenny was a student at the Memphis College of Art. Her own words best describe why she took on such a monumental project at such a busy time in her life: “The cross is the sweetest intermingling of tragedy and beauty. It is the very reason for art. Without Christ’s sacrifice there would be no beauty in the world; no overflow of joy, no hope for the human heart. For me, without the cross there is no art.”

Jenny acknowledges the art of Kathe Kollowitz, whose work greatly influenced her while she worked on The Via Crucis. She is thrilled to begin her career by drawing the cornerstone of her artistic inspiration, and hopes to use art as a therapeutic healing tool for those who have experienced traumatic pain and loss.
